Double-deck Pinochle is a 4-player partnership trick-taking and melding card game played with an 80-card deck (four copies of 9 through Ace) where each player is dealt 20 cards.
Bidding & Evaluation Strategy
• Sort Immediately: Organize your 20 cards cleanly by suit and rank (alternating colors or stacking groups) to prevent missing combinations.
• Assess Your Meld Potential: Base your bids heavily on double/triple runs, multiple pinochles (Queen of Spades + Jack of Diamonds), and marriages rather than just high cards.
• Count Trick-Taking Power: Remember that Aces, 10s, and Kings are "counter points" (worth 1 point each in tricks, plus a 2-point bonus for the last trick). You need to make sure your side can pull at least 20 counter points and 20 meld points to get "on the board".
• Communicate with Your Partner: Pay attention to your partner's bid and the suit they likely hold. If you win the bid, choose a trump suit where you hold deep support (multiple marriages or a run).
Melding Strategy
• Maximize Double/Triple Combinations: Because it is a double deck, look for Double Pinochle (two Queen of Spades + two Jack of Diamonds) or Double Runs, which yield massive point swings.
• Protect the Board Minimum: Ensure your team crosses the threshold of 20 meld points and 20 trick points so your meld isn't invalidated or penalized.
• Track Played Cards: Note which high trumps, Aces, and 10s have already hit the table so you can safely finesse or dump low cards later in the hand.
Trick-Taking & Playing Strategy
• Lead Trump or Control Suits: If your team has a heavy trump advantage, drawing trump out of the opponents' hands early prevents them from ruffing (trumping) your high-card winners.
• Feed Your Partner: When your partner is leading or sitting in a strong position to win the trick, throw off high counter points (like Aces or 10s) if safe, or retain them if you are trying to capture them from the opponents.
• Watch the Count: Keep a running mental tally of how many counter points (Aces, 10s, Kings) have been played so you know whether your team has secured the points needed to make your bid.
